The Ilyas & Mustafa Galadari Group
September 2008

With a long history of enterprise and commercial activity dating from the 1940s, the Galadari family is continuing the family tradition with the Ilyas and Mustafa Galadari Group, a highly regarded, multi-faceted organisation based in Dubai.

The group’s diversified business portfolio includes real estate development, agencies for overseas companies, hospitality, food storage, gems and jewellery, automobiles and transport. In the six years of its existence, the company has shown ambition and determination to grow and launch new enterprises whenever the opportunity occurs, and is committed to expanding its activities and playing a leading role in the growth of modern Dubai using its extensive experience and distinctive heritage to deliver exceptional results.
The Ilyas and Mustafa Galadari Group (IMGG) aims to develop its flagship project, City of Arabia, home to the Mall of Arabia and the Restless Planet, into a thriving community at the heart of Dubailand. At the same time it continues to uphold a reputation as an important business entity in the region, whilst developing ambitious plans to increase the group’s presence in construction, manufacturing and services.

Combining considered expansion with responsible development, IMGG aims to be an efficient service provider, committed to investors, strategic partners and employees, building long-term relationships and fostering a climate for growth, value and satisfaction.

RLI caught up with IMGG’s Alex Vacha, Deputy Director for Projects, Iyas & Mustafa Galadari Group and asked how he would sum up the group’s progress to date.
“We are close to completing the foundation work which, considering that we’re talking about a 20 million square foot site, is a major undertaking,” he says.

The group continues to progress steadily on the project’s main components – Mall of Arabia, the Restless Planet, 34 commercial and residential towers and Wadi Walk, a waterfront community consisting of stylish apartments, outdoor cafes and attractive
retail outlets.

“We are very happy with the progress made so far,” continues Vacha. “Part of Phase 1 is expected to open towards the end of 2010, with Wadi Walk being one of the first phases to launch.”

The last couple of years have seen a period of intense development for IMGG. So what have been the greatest challenges facing the group during this time, and what lessons have been learned?

“Dubai is just about the fastest growing city in the world, and with the scale of development we’re seeing it is inevitable that there will be consequences. But we have faith in the ability of the government authorities in Dubai to deliver solutions,”
says Vacha.

“There is a tremendous amount of work going on to ease traffic congestion, with major road works and expansions, new bridges, tunnels, underpasses and intersections; improvements to public transport with the Dubai Metro, new rail and tram systems also planned, many more new buses, as well as more water transport.”

By the time the first phase of City of Arabia opens towards the end of 2010, Dubai’s infrastructure will have developed considerably to cope with the large number of visitors that will be attracted to City of Arabia. The Emirates Road now has six lanes in both directions adjacent to City of Arabia and two major intersections are planned, one at either end of the development.

“Our own monorail system will be linked to Dubai Metro,” continues Vacha, “which will have a station at the entrance to City of Arabia. From there, the monorail will provide visitors with a comfortable and convenient link to all the major theme parks and shopping areas.”
