FITOUT REVIEW

Havelock Contract Interiors
June 2008

For decades, Havelock has been leading the interior fit-out industry; its success has
been built on an understanding of the customer, developing a clear view of their business and working in close partnership to deliver interiors that enable them to meet their objectives.

Last year, Havelock Retail Interiors was restructured to create two specialist businesses to maximise further the Havelock Group’s competitive advantage in the interiors market. Havelock Interiors is focused on the design, development, supply and installation of fixtures, with Havelock Contract Interiors (HCI), specialising in developing all trades contracting solutions.
At the time, Managing Director of HCI, Martin Hilton told RLI: “The restructuring will provide greater customer focus enabling additional growth through strengthening relationships with existing customers and winning new accounts in both interiors contracting and supply and install.”

This restructuring was expected to maximise existing business whilst targeting new clients from a £2.49bn market sector. This month, RLI caught up with Hilton to see what progress has been made, and the news is good indeed.

“Since restructuring we have significantly increased our client base”
The challenge is clear, says Hilton, HCI’s vision is to become the first-choice interior fit-out contractor. The strategy is to focus on framework or partnering agreements and has had significant success.

HCI have several such agreements in place with ‘blue chip’ clients such as Royal Bank of Scotland, HBOS, Lloyds TSB, and roll-out contracts for both the Co-op Pharmacy, National Bank of Kuwait and House of Fraser.

HCI’s relationship with House of Fraser has been a long-term affair, “This year alone we have completed stores at Oxford Street in London, Belfast and High Wycombe and are currently working on projects at Bristol, White City, Manchester and a new three-year project in Glasgow, with a number of other House of Fraser projects ongoing, adding over 600,000sq ft to their trading space,” says Hilton.

Peter Horrix, Store Development Director for House of Fraser says “The HCI team have evolved from the traditional Havelock manufacturing base with the ability to plan, organise and deliver interior fit-out contracts in a thoroughly professional manner by combining a global shopfitting design and manufacture capability with a truly customer focused on site operation. This was exemplified recently when we were able to open two major new stores totalling 250,000sq ft of trading space within seven days of each other to an exceptional standard.”

Capitalising on its contracting expertise in the retail banking sector, HCI entered the corporate financial office fit-out sector, opening a new office in London to service and develop this market. HCI has secured contracts with two of the biggest corporate financial organisations in the world.

Recruitment and training are key factors in the growth aspirations of HCI. The challenge, says Hilton, lies in managing and controlling that growth without sacrificing service and quality.

“We are committed to recruiting only the best and investing in their ongoing
career development,” he says. “We capitalise on the strengths of each individual element of the supply chain, using their expertise to create innovation and increase customer value.”
