| At
a time when talk is very much of uncertainty and the return
of austerity in a business suffering the consequences of the
global economic downturn, the Global RLI Awards 2009 provided
a refreshingly optimistic antidote this month. Held on the 18
June at Old Billingsgate, London, the evening was a fitting
celebration of the retail and leisure industries’ triumphs
and achievements, and of a spirited ‘can-do’ attitude. |

| “This
is the second time I have attended the Global RLI Awards and
the second time I have been impressed, said David Sylvester,
Vice President, Retail Development Asia with Headline Sponsor,
Sands Retail Asia. “The quality of the production, of
the guests and of the opportunity to network in a relaxed environment
has made the event an important date on our calendar. Our sponsorship
of the Awards over the last two years has certainly proven very
beneficial in aligning Sands Retail Asia with the very best
of the international retail leisure industry and I look forward
to welcoming several of this years attendees at our forthcoming
mall in Singapore’s iconic Marina Bay Sands integrated
resort development.” |

The
occasion started with a Champagne Reception, held on the terrace
overlooking the Thames. Against a
historic backdrop that included Tower Bridge, London Bridge,
the South Bank and HMS Belfast, guests enjoyed the pleasant
evening weather whilst mingling and networking over refreshing
glasses of ‘fizz’ or the ever-popular summer staple,
Pimms. It was a delightful start to a fantastic evening. |

Guests
were then called into the dining hall itself and were delighted
at the grandeur of Old Billingsgate, itself one of London’s
most extraordinary and unique venues; with its wonderful open
space, combined with stunning architecture, the elegant nineteenth
century
Grade II Listed structure has been sensitively refurbished by
Lord Rogers.
The evening was introduced by Sky News presenter Lucy Alexander,
who was hosting the ceremony for the fourth consecutive year,
after which RLI Publisher Jayne Rafter took to the stage to
welcome everyone. “It is particularly pleasing to see
so many people here tonight – it’s a real testimony
to the growth of RLI and the esteem in which it’s held
around the world,” she said. “It is clear that our
industry presents us with many challenges but let’s face
it, there are also some great opportunities out there and there
is no sign that the high standards we’ve come to expect
have gone down, or that passion in our bones to achieve bigger
and better disappeared.” |

A
gourmet meal was enjoyed by all, followed by a spectacular selection
of hits from the West End and Cinema musical phenomenon, Mamma
Mia. Performed by the show’s cast, such greats as Mamma
Mia, Voulez Vous, Dancing Queen and of course, The Winner Takes
it All had people up and dancing at their tables.
BCSC Chief Executive Michael Green said: “Mama Mia! what
a great night, rewarding companies and people for their immense
hard work in delivering exciting shopping and retail destinations
around the world.” |

thought the event was very well run, more interesting than the
Retail Week awards dinner and with a good friendly atmosphere,”
commented Mark Tuley, International Group Property Development
Manager, GAME Group Plc.
Sean Kelly, Managing Director of PR4Property, said: “Thank
you for a lovely evening, it’s what the
industry needs.” |

of Aftershock, All Saints, the Extreme Group, Harvey Nichols,
Nobu, Reed Midem, Debenhams, House of Frasier and Arcadia, raised
some £4,000.
Eleanor Searson, Project Manager – Store Development at
House of Fraser, said: “A really superb night, people
were very friendly and happy to mix in a relaxed way which I
didn’t find at the only other awards I have been to.”
Linda Welch, Director, Halogen, commented: “So many of
the retail property dinners follow a virtually identical format.
It was really refreshing to be at one that had such a strong
