ThThe winners of the Global RLI Awards 2007 were announced at a spectacular gala dinner held in the truly breathtaking surroundings of the Natural History Museum's Central Hall on 7 June.

A fantastic night was had by all as we celebrated the great and the good of the retail and leisure industries Held at the Natural History Museum in London on 7 June 2007, the Global RLI Awards had once again promised a spectacular evening of celebration for the most innovative and imaginative retail and leisure concepts across the globe — and, again, the evening certainly delivered.

The culmination of the two-day RLI Global Opportunities Conference 2007, the gala awards dinner was set within the sumptuous Central Hall of the world's most historic and atmospheric museums, an awe-inspiring setting for the year’s most anticipated event.

As some 600 elegantly dressed guests arrived for a Champagne Reception in Waterhouse Way, they mingled and chatted among wall-to-wall exhibits of millennia-old fossils and natural curiosities whilst Chinese acrobats, dancers, lions and pandas entertained the throng. This fascinating environment proved an ideal opportunity to relax and catch up with colleagues and friends.
As dinner was announced and guests entered the Great Hall there were gasps of delight; dominating the scene was the enormous dinosaur skeleton that so many of us remembered from visits in our youth, lit to great effect and complemented by star-hung walls. All agreed that the venue really was something a little special.
In her opening address, RLI Publishing Director Jayne Rafter welcomed everyone and set the tone of the evening, stating: “Tonight is all about recognition — an appreciation of the very best in our industry — and following the success of last year’s inaugural awards, I am delighted to be able to tell you that this year's event is bigger, better and more exciting still.”

Following a sumptuous Gala Dinner, the evening's Presenter, glamorous Sky newsreader Lucy Alexander, took to the stage to introduce the evening's entertainment and the cast of the hit West End musical ‘Wicked’
took to the stage.
Wicked offers a prequel to The Wizard of Oz story, telling the incredible untold story of an extraordinary friendship between two girls: the blond and popular Glinda and the misunderstood green girl, Elphaba, whose destiny is to become the infamous Wicked Witch of the West, leading up to the moment when Dorothy’s house falls on the green witch’s sister, and continuing for a few more scenes.
Following the show and a short comfort break, Lucy Alexander took to the stage once more to introduce the evening’s surprise guest speaker. Best known for his unfortunate comments regarding the quality of his merchandise, Gerald Ratner has led an interesting rollercoaster ride retail life and he entertained the audience with tales of his career following those ill-chosen comments — and the media fascination with man himself.
Everybody took time to generously donate to the evening’s supported charities, Retail Trust and Children With Leukaemia and a staggering £6,000 was raised in the charity raffle. RLI is extremely grateful for the generosity of our guests in supporting what we believe to be two truly worthwhile causes.

We would like to once again thank our sponsors, our guests and the entire back room team who ensured a most successful, spectacular awards evening. RLI would also like to apologise to those who wished to take tables, only to find the event fully booked. Next year's Global RLI Awards will be held at the new Wembley Stadium on 12 June 2008 — we look forward to seeing you there!
