PROFILES - INDUSTRY PROFILE - NOV 2011 - MK ILLUMINATION

spreadFounded 15 years ago, MK Illumination has gone from strength to strength, branching out into new markets and securing multi-million pound projects. Kenan Altindag. Director of MK Illumination Switzerland and MK Illumination Shanghai, speaks to RLI about the MK Illumination Group.

Founded in Austria 15 years ago, MK Illumination started life as a small trading company, later producing its own high quality goods at its own factories in China and Slovakia. Originally serving the hospitality industry, it expanded into wholesale, city illuminations and shopping centres and offering a full turn-key solution provider due to demand from the industry.

Kenan Altindag, Director of MK Illumination Switzerland and MK Illumination Shanghai, said: “We started serving the shopping centre industry around five years ago and this has turned out to be one of the most promising industries for us. It has been an evolution.

“Our status is unique in the industry. We offer a consultancy service for the early stages of the planning process of shopping centres where we support the architects and other consultants such as interior designers, landscapers, developers and shopping centre managers and give them ideas on how to prepare the shopping mall for festive and year-round lighting before the construction work starts.

“We have experienced that if these things are missing in the operational part of the shopping mall, it is really hard to decorate the shopping mall without making it ugly and in a cost effective way without causing disruption.

“Sometimes, some several hundred million euros are invested into shopping malls and although they look fantastic when they open, they do not cater for the seasonal decorations. The grand opening is important, but so is what happens afterwards.”

Altindag said because the company produce their own goods, they can ensure the high quality and standard of all its installations and can manufacture and install lighting which is compatible with existing installations.

The company has also received a boost in business for year-round fixed decorative lighting within shopping centres – a growing market, particularly in Asia.

MK Illumination also produces the items and delivers, installs, stores and maintains the lighting if requested.

Altindag said: “We do sculptures in all dimensions in all possible – and impossible shapes. Because we have our own team, we can design and make anything.”

MK Illumination works in 23 countries around the globe with a strong presence in Europe. It has also opened a subsidiary in Russia and Shanghai this year and is currently working on establishing a new subsidiary in the US. The company has invested in new machinery in the production in Slovakia to aid the company in using environmentally friendly materials within its lighting schemes.
