Established in the early 1970s as a ‘one man and his van’ construction-orientated business, Portview has evolved – by way of decades of organic growth, rebranding and a 1996 management buy-out – to become a universal fit-out specialist that project manages interior fit-out and refurbishment contracts for many of the biggest names in high street retailing, major banks and building societies, top hoteliers, museums and clients within the office and public sectors across the UK and Ireland.
“We call ourselves a universal fit out specialist,” says Managing Director, Simon Campbell. “This reflects the fact we work across all the different interior sectors and the fact that we have a skillset that allows us to differentiate ourselves from others.”
Having posted a record year in 2010, and with economic conditions last year proving challenging to say the least, Portview has therefore been heartened by its ten per cent growth year-on-year in 2011. This was, says Campbell, a direct result of the company’s carefully nurtured relationships and the consistent high standards that it insists upon.
“On top of this, we have a broad range of clients and it’s that diversity and not being too dependent on anyone in this climate, that can be so important,” he adds. “I’d like to think we are an open learning company and have always enjoyed working for people who set the highest standards.”
A prime example of this can be seen in Portview’s relationship with luxury retailer Harrods, with whom it has been working for four years. “We feel we have proved and demonstrated consistently that we can give them what they are looking for,” comments Campbell.
In addition to its work with Harrods, the company has also commenced a major project with World Duty Free at Gatwick and a number of contracts for Arcadia, including those in Derry and Rotherham.
In 2010, Portview completed a £3.5M fit-out at the Emirates Stadium, its largest project to date, and returned in 2011 to undertake another bar and work on executive boxes.
Campbell says: “This project exemplifies how our fantastic CAD team translated the client’s design ideas and vision into a buildable successful project.”
Portview has also completed projects for Toys R Us and was very active at the Westfield Stratford site, where it undertook six; working for Arcadia, Omega, Swatch, HMV, Geox and Uniqlo – a good representation of the breath of relationships the company has.
Looking forward then, what is Portview’s plan for 2012?
“We will continue to develop those sectors in which we haven’t done as much in the past; we’ve had a retail focus, we have done museum, hotel and office work, and we want to build on that in 2012 and the longer term,” says Campbell.
