Gaston County has no shortage of dollar stores and discount retailers, but the newest one to arrive in 2019 will come with a bit more of a youthful, trendy vibe.
The first-ever Five Below location will open this year in Franklin Square in Gastonia, at 3080 E. Franklin Blvd. It will set up in the section of the shopping center anchored by Walmart, where commercial leasing is overseen by the New York City-based Brixmor Property Group. Brixmor spokeswoman Kristen Moore confirmed the news in an email Tuesday.
“Five Below will be opening in an 11,400-square-foot space near Best Buy,” she said. Five Below spokesman Alyssa Grugan said their goal is to be up and running in the spring.
“We are slated to open the store in April 2019,” she said.
The city of Gastonia’s inspections department also recently approved a building permit for the interior renovation, which will cost $200,000 and be overseen by D.H. Griffin Construction Co.
Five Below’s claim to fame as a variety store is for selling products that cost $5 or less, but with a lot more flair and enthusiasm than the average discount store. It targets its products and the design of its stores toward children, adolescents, teenagers and females, marketing its merchandise with colorful, well-organized aisles.
Stores typically include things such as toys, fashion accessories, sports-related items, games, room decorations, accessories for electronic devices, DVDs, school supplies and stationery, bath and body-related products, and novelty and gag items. Seasonal items also appear throughout the year to mix up the merchandise.
Products are arranged to fit one of eight different categories, including Tech, Style, Room, Play, Create, Party, Candy, and New & Now.
Five Below opened its first location in Wayne, Pennsylvania, in October 2002. Since then, its popularity has grown exponentially, and it now operates 745 stores in 33 states, supported by a pair of large distribution centers.
Just last year, the company opened 53 new stores in the third quarter of 2018, from July to September alone.
The Five Below in Gastonia will become the sixth to open in the metro-Charlotte area, and the first one west of the Catawba River.
