H-E-B will open Heights Supermarket

H-E-B will open its long-anticipated Heights supermarket on Wednesday, two years after neighborhood residents overturned a century-old ban on off-premise alcohol sales.

The 92,000-square-foot supermarket at North Shepherd and 24th Street takes full advantage of the Heights’ newly wet status. The double-decker store stocks 1,800 bottles of wine and 300 beers, including offerings from local craft breweries such as Eureka Heights.

“We knew our beer and wine selection had better be good,” Scott McClelland, H-E-B’s Houston division president, said on a recent tour of the new supermarket.

The new H-E-B, which sits on the second floor of the parking garage, brings an urban feel to the residential neighborhood. Shoppers can park on the well-lit ground level and take elevators or escalators up to the store. There is a separate escalator reserved for shopping carts.
