The contactless payment method called Amazon One was installed at a store in Seattle earlier this week.
Amazon One, which was first released last September, was previously only available in select Amazon Go stores. Upon its release, Amazon announced its intention to expand the technology across different stores; this has now become a reality with the launch of the technology in a Whole Foods store in Seattle.
The technology involves customers enrolling their palms in Amazon’s system to make payments via their palm ‘signature’ by linking them to their credit cards. The palm signature is made by analysing the lines, creases, bones and soft tissue beneath the epidermis of the customer’s palm.
Once the customer’s palm signature has been registered and stored, customers can make payments by hovering their hands over the reader device. Following the launch of the Seattle store, Amazon intends to expand the technology to seven other stores over the coming months.
