The discount retailer has announced that they intend to open 1050 new stores in 2021, as well as 1750 store renovations and 100 store relocations.
Dollar General already operates 17,000 stores across the US and the plans to open around 1000 new stores means that the company intends to open more than 20 new stores each week. Each store occupies a space of around 7300-15000sq ft and carefully chosen pre-existing locations mean that Dollar General stores are relatively inexpensive to build, keeping in line with the brands rapid and consistent expansion strategy.
Dollar General Chief Financial Officer stated that around 600 stores will welcome fresh product while around half of the new builds and around 75 per cent of renovations will operate under the ‘Traditional Plus’ format which boasts 34 cooler doors as opposed to the traditional 22. The company also intends to open 30 new units under the Pop Shelf Concept – a décor and home goods company.
