Dubai’s newest city, called District 2020, is ready to go live when the Dubai Expo 2020 finishes in March 2022.
Dubai’s latest version of a ‘smart city’ will emerge out of the 2.5sq km that is currently earmarked as the Dubai Expo 2020 venue.
Chief Development and Delivery Officer for the Expo, commented: “We will start handover of some of the permanent Expo 2020 builds immediately. Our buildings are built for the Expo… and [thereafter] as its legacy. It will take about four to six months for the actual opening of the first phase. Within a maximum of one year, the entire city – District 2020 Phase 1 – will be available.”
When plans were being put together for the site and attractions of the Dubai Expo 2020, the area’s future was a key driver for the team, who wanted to ensure that the district could be repurposed after the six-month world event. Masterplan designs went through constant tweaks as new elements were added to aid the transition from a temporary event venue into a permanent city.
