Starbucks Japan Continues on Sustainability Drive

The company has taken a step further in its sustainability goals with the launch of a new programme that intends to reduce food waste in the country.

Beginning this coming Monday 23 September, the programme will see bakery products reduced by 20 per cent several hours prior to closing. The programme will initially be rolled out in select Starbucks stores across the country but will not be available through delivery services of the Starbucks app.

A portion of the revenue on these discounted products will go to Musubie, a local non for profit that provides meals for children across Japan. The move comes as part of Starbucks’ efforts to fight against hunger in the country.

This initiative comes just months after Starbucks Japan announced that it will be transitioning all of its 350 free-standing stores to 100 per cent renewable energy by the end of October 2021. This forms a part of the company’s global commitment to reduce carbon emissions by as much as 50 per cent by 2030.
