Subway to Focus on Non-Traditional Expansion

Subway is focusing store expansion on non-traditional locations, including interactive, fully unattended smart fridges.

The quick-service sandwich chain is basing expansion plans on “grab & go” stores that serve customers who are in a hurry, outside of its traditional brick-and-mortar locations. These include Subway’s first-ever smart fridge, opened in September 2022 at the University of California San Diego.

Featuring artificial intelligence and natural language processing, the fridge enables customers to talk directly to it and ask about any of the products inside. Weight-sensor shelves help ensures customers are charged correctly, resulting in a completely contactless and cashless transaction. UV-C light sanitation occurs after every purchase.

“As more of our guests search for dining experiences to meet their ‘in-the-moment’ needs, the brand’s non-traditional locations and platforms can serve them wherever and whenever they are craving Subway,” said Taylor Bennett, VP of Non-Traditional Development at Subway. “As Subway focuses on strategic and profitable growth, there is a significant opportunity to expand our footprint in non-traditional locations and for franchisees to generate incremental revenue for their business.”
