Under Armour Jumps into Retail in Spain

The American sports firm Under Armour increases its commitment to the Spanish market with the opening of its first single-brand store in the country, located in the La Maquinista shopping centre in Barcelona.

Under Armour has set up shop in an establishment with a surface area of 450sq m and, for its development in retail in Spain through franchises, it has teamed up with Grup Galceran, which includes other North American firms such as Gap in its portfolio.

The store, which presents the sports brand’s “Brand House” concept, includes clothing, accessories and footwear for men and women in its catalogue and covers various categories, from running to basketball.

“This opening is a great milestone for Under Armour in Spain, a region in which our growth continues to expand rapidly,” said Phil Fox, Vice President of Sales for the EMEA area.

Under Armour is distributed in Spain through multi-brand stores, chains such as Base, Intersport or Forum Sport and is present in El Corte Inglés. In fact, in September 2021 it opened its largest “shop in shop” in Europe in the group’s department stores in Portal de l’Àngel (Barcelona), since it has 500sq m of surface area.

Economically, the firm operates in the country through the subsidiary Under Armor Spain, which in 2020 (last year for which data is available) increased its sales from 8.6 to 8.8 million euros. On the other hand, and due to a decrease in income from the provision of services within the European Union and a drop in sales outside the Union, the company’s turnover in the aforementioned financial year fell by 6.5 per cent.
