Adrian Zecha and Naru Developments have announced the opening of the hotel, which is the brand’s debut property.
Azumi Setoda is located within a 140-year old Japanese residential compound on Ikuchijima, a small and tranquil island in the Japanese Seto Inland Sea. Perfect for the contemporary traveller, the hotel delicately balances tradition and modernity to best offer the ryokan hospitality experience. Kyoto-based architect Shiro Miura has restored the hotel’s compound, respecting the original purpose of the building whilst reimagining the next chapter of its life.
Dining plays a key role within the hotel and the restaurant is centred on a communal dining experience. The chef’s at the restaurant have created a menu that elevates traditional home-cooking, using local ingredients, seafood, fresh citrus and vegetables. The menu will consistently change, inspired by the seasons.
The hotel also boasts a yubune bathhouse, which was also designed by Shiro Miura. This is located across the street from the main hotel. Azumi will operate Ybune not only for its guests, but as a public bathhouse where all are invited to learn about the Japanese experiences of bathing culture, lemon and salt bathing, and the sauna.
