Best Buy takes a jump into fitness

Soon you will be able to purchase connected fitness products, many of which will virtually connect users with trainers. The assortment includes such high-tech items as stationary spin bikes that offer virtual cycling classes and rowing machines that feature real time classes live on the water from locations like Miami and Boston.

The equipment, which is now available on the retailer’s web site, will be displayed in a new dedicated fitness space coming to more than 100 Best Buy stores by the end of the year. The retailer said the products are part of its commitment ‘to helping customers use technology to live better, healthier lives.‘

“We know there’s a growing intersection between fitness and technology, and no one knows tech like we do,” said Jason Bonfig, chief merchandising officer, Best Buy. “We’ve promised our customers we’ll help enrich their lives, including their health and wellness, by using technology. This is a great example of how we’re living up to that commitment.”

Best Buy and Geek Squad will manage delivery and installation of the products. The fitness collection expands on Best Buy’s growing interest in health tech. Last summer, the company acquired GreatCall, which offers easy-to-use mobile products and customer care services to help older adults live more independently. Earlier this month, it acquired a senior remote monitoring company, Critical Signal Technologies.
