Malaysia’s Happy Potato Expands

Malaysian shaker fries chain Happy Potato has expanded into four international markets within six months, establishing a presence in Bangladesh, Indonesia, China and Cambodia as part of its regional growth strategy.

The expansion takes the company’s network to 126 outlets across five countries: 117 in Malaysia, three in Bangladesh and two each in Indonesia, China and Cambodia.

Founded in Kota Kinabalu in 2019 with a single outlet, Happy Potato opened its first directly operated store in Peninsular Malaysia in 2023 and has since rapidly expanded its franchise network. The brand added 98 outlets nationwide between 2024 and 2025, paving the way for its overseas expansion this year.

CEO and Co-Founder Edmund Lim said the company spent years strengthening its franchise model and operating systems before expanding internationally.

“Opening an outlet is only one part of expansion. The bigger challenge is making sure customers receive the same experience, product quality and service standards regardless of where they visit us. That requires the right operating systems, franchise support and local partners,” he said.

Happy Potato made its international debut in Bangladesh and Indonesia in February, followed by China in May and Cambodia in July. Lim said the latest expansion has reinforced the company’s confidence in scaling its business while maintaining consistent quality across markets.

“Happy Potato began as a home-grown Malaysian fries brand and today we are serving customers across five markets. But this is only the first chapter,” he said.
