Old Central Market Prepares to Reopen

With a proposed opening date of August 23, the revitalised project is set to become Hong Kong’s latest landmark.

Originally built in 1939, Central Market is a Grade III historic building and was Hong Kong’s very first wet market. The renovation plans for the building were initially announced in 2009 and now, 12 years and $500M later, the highly-anticipated revamped project is set to open its doors to visitors next week, boasting a brand new look.

With a new title as a ‘Playground for All’, the venue will house a number of exciting dining and shopping venues, ranging from specialty restaurants to local fashion boutiques and much more. Alongside the retail element, a wide range of educational and cultural activities will be held at the market in partnership with different Hong Kong-based institutions and organisations.

The renovation of the market has taken original architectural elements into careful consideration, preserving these to ensure an authentic feeling, meanwhile contemporary designs have been incorporated into the complex including bi-folding doors, a large central piazza equipped with projection and sound systems and a 2,500sq ft multi-functional event space that will play host to forums, exhibitions and cultural performances in the future.
