Starbucks Taiwan Opens First Community Store

The coffee chain’s first community concept café has opened in Xiulin Township, in partnership with local operator Uni-Wonder Corporation.

Hualian culture has influenced the store’s design with works of art by regional artists Miru Hayung and Eleng Luluan being shown. In addition, Shi Ma Hsiu-Hua, a Truku traditional weaver, has worked with indigenous women to design the brand’s green apron which features totem ornamentation.

According to the company, the first Community Store in Hualien builds on the company’s long-standing commitment to the indigenous community. Since its debut in 1998, Starbucks has established more than 540 points of sale in the region and through its ‘Indigenous Hope’ programme; the company has supported the educational growth of indigenous children since 1999.

Last month, Starbucks Korea presented the design of its fifth community store in the country called ‘Kyungdong 1960.’ This design incorporates a theatre-inspired concept that is related to the Kyungdong Market’s tradition.
