A wave of shopping centre openings is set for Taiwan this year as developers continue to invest in large-scale mixed-use projects.
One of the largest openings is the Far Eastern Sogo Department Store’s Garden City in Taipei, scheduled to launch in March. The 99,000sq m complex will include retail, dining and cinemas, with direct connections to the Taipei Dome.
Far Eastern Sogo chair Sophia Huang said the company expects Garden City to generate more than US$313.66M in annual revenue. Combined with its Fuxing, Zhongxiao and Tianmu stores in Taipei, the group’s total annual revenue could reach $1.58bn.
In Taichung, the Hanshin Intercontinental Shopping Plaza is slated to open this year, marking Hanshin’s first expansion beyond Kaohsiung.
Mitsui Fudosan is also expanding its presence in Taiwan. The company said its third Mitsui Shopping Park LaLaport, under construction in Kaohsiung’s Fengshan District, is on track to open by the end of the year. The 270-store mall will feature dining outlets, drugstores, a supermarket, a large bookstore and the Arte Museum.
The developer added that a new Mitsui Outlet Park near the Taiwan High Speed Rail Tainan Station is expected to open in the first or second quarter. The 240-store outlet centre will house home goods retailers, electronics stores, a Japanese-style supermarket and food and beverage tenants.
