Jaguar Land Rover tests autonomous vehicle in Dubai

Auto giant Jaguar Land Rover has reportedly tested a self-driving prototype called the I-PACE on the streets of Dubai. The all-electric, zero emissions I-PACE includes enhanced vehicle detection and avoidance capabilities through a combination of radar and cameras, alongside a traffic light detection system, reports said.

The vehicle’s speed and steering, from stationary up to highway speed, was also controlled autonomously during test drives, it was reported. In April, Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum issued a new resolution to regulate autonomous vehicle testing in Dubai.

The resolution, the first such initiative in the region, is part of the first phase of a legislative framework being created to ensure the highest efficiency, reliability and security of smart mobility. Bruce Robertson, managing director of Jaguar Land Rover MENA, was quoted as saying: “Jaguar Land Rover shares similar goals to Dubai’s government with regards to mobility and sustainability. We both wish to make driving safer, to free up time we spend travelling, and to reduce the negative impact travel has on our planet. The Dubai World Congress for Self-Driving Transport tackles these same important challenges head-on, and our autonomous Jaguar I-PACE prototype is proof positive of the impressive progress our company and industry are making.”
