Castañer Lands in Portugal

The business has made its debut in Portuguese retail, with the Catalan footwear brand opening a corner in the El Corte Inglés department store in Lisbon, its first mono-brand space in the Portuguese market.

Temporary in nature (although the company has not indicated how long it will remain open), this retail outlet aims to bring Castañer’s catalogue closer to Portuguese customers and strengthen its presence on the Iberian Peninsula.

“This opening represents a natural step in the company’s international growth strategy, which continues to reinforce its position in key destinations in Southern Europe, while maintaining its Mediterranean essence and its connection to tradition,” the brand stated in a press release.

In terms of interior design, Castañer has incorporated its “Mediterranean Atelier” decorative concept into its space at El Corte Inglés in Lisbon, highlighting its creative process and artisanal character. This spirit is also reflected in its collection, which includes some of the brand’s classic models, as well as new silhouettes and material combinations.

The brand is approaching its centenary, having been founded in 1927 by Luis Castañer and Tomàs Serra. Specialising in espadrilles, it currently has a presence in more than twenty markets through some 30 stores and over 900 multi-brand points of sale. Managed by the family-owned company Espadrilles Banyoles, it is headquartered in Banyoles, Girona and achieved a turnover of €30.8M in 2024, thanks to the growth of its online channel and its national and international expansion strategy.
