Freight Island to Open its Doors in June

Eldon Square, the leading retail and leisure destination, has confirmed that Freight Island will open at the centre in June 2026, unveiling the first CGI visuals of the landmark rooftop food, drink and cultural destination.

The new 60,000sq ft venue will transform the top floor and rooftop of the former Debenhams unit into what will become the largest single-site food, drink and entertainment venue in a UK city centre, marking one of the most significant leisure developments in the UK this year.

Designed as a flexible, all-day destination, Freight Island will transition from open-air daytime dining to a late-night entertainment setting, supporting a broad programme of live music, cultural events and large-scale activations. At the centre of the space will be a major covered environment beneath the UK’s largest retractable roof in a hospitality venue, enabling year-round operation.

Food will sit at the heart of the concept, with twelve kitchens bringing together a curated mix of established local operators and leading national brands, alongside a wider programme of food-led events and experiences. A multi-bar drinks offering will complement the food line-up, supporting dwell time across day-to-night trading.

The development is expected to create more than 300 jobs across hospitality, events, production and the creative industries, contributing to Newcastle’s growing visitor economy and reinforcing Eldon Square’s role as a leading mixed-use destination in the North East.

Opening in June 2026, Freight Island represents a significant milestone in Eldon Square’s continued evolution, further strengthening its experience-led offer and supporting Newcastle’s position as a major UK city for hospitality, culture and nightlife.

Dan Morris, Managing Director of Freight Island, said: “Freight Island Newcastle will be one of the most exciting hospitality and entertainment spaces in the UK. The scale and flexibility of the venue allow us to deliver a truly multi-functional destination, from daytime dining through to major live events and late-night programming, all within a single space. Working with Eldon Square gives us the opportunity to bring this concept to a prominent city centre location, supporting local talent, creating jobs and building a destination that reflects Newcastle’s energy and cultural identity.”
