The discounter has opened a supercentre location in Cypress, Texas, which is its first ground-up supercentre in four years and its first new-construction “store of the future” in the US.
Walmart plans to build or convert more than 150 stores to its new superstore model over the next several years. In addition, in 2025 Walmart plans to open new supercentres in Frisco and Melissa, Texas; Eagle Mountain, Utah and Eastvale, California. Neighbourhood markets will debut in Tuscaloosa, Alabama; Milton, Florida and Pace, Florida, while stores in Mountain View, California and East Windsor, New Jersey will be converted into full supercentres.
Designed to make shopping faster, easier and more connected, the Cypress supercentre features reimagined layouts, expanded services and in-store technology. According to Walmart, this new “store of the future” opening is part of a broader multi-million-dollar investment strategy intended to modernise retail, create jobs and enhance the shopping experience for customers across the US. Walmart says the new supercentre will create hundreds of local jobs, showcase local Texas-based suppliers and serve as a community hub.
“This isn’t just a ribbon cutting. It’s a commitment to the future, an investment in a community and new job opportunities,” said John Furner, President and CEO of Walmart US. “I’m proud of our associates in Cypress who brought this to reality. A new store means new opportunities, not only for associates starting or continuing a career, but for small businesses and service partners that will grow alongside the store.”
