World’s First Meme Museum to Open

Hong Kong’s K11 Art Mall is collaborating with 9Gag to bring memes to life in the world’s first meme museum ahead of an NFT auction.

Consisting of seven themed zones, the Meme Museum portrays more than 100 global and local viral memes that showcase famed images from different time periods in various forms, including imagery, 3D figures and smell.

The first zone is called the Meme Time Tunnel and houses 24 classic memes that range from the 60s to the present day. These include ‘Success Kid’, ‘Distracted Boyfriend’ and ‘Woman Yelling at a Cat.’ Meanwhile, another zone called Mem-go-round is a rotating display that allows guests to journey around the world in 78 frames of authentic Hong Kong-style jokes, international celebrity gags and animated classics.

The Beyond the Meme zone offers a 4D interactive experience with AR technology and features locals’ favourite memes including ‘Confused Nick Young’ and ‘Side Eyeing Chloe’ in physical forms. Visitors can have their favourite meme tattooed onto them at the Memeingful Tattoo Station zone and can also purchase one of the first 1,000 copies of the limited-edition meme board game, that will be launched exclusively at the museum.

The Meme Museum will be open at K11 Art Mal until September 5.
