35M Meals Served Up With Eat Out to Help Out

The scheme which offers diners 50% off their bill at up to £10 a head has proved extremely successful, serving up 35m meals in the first two weeks.

The initiative that was implemented by the Treasury aims to help breathe life back into the hospitality sector following the coronavirus-induced lockdown which closed around 80% of restaurants, pubs and cafes in April. According to the Treasury, it was the hardest-hit sector until it was allowed to reopen on July 4.

The scheme has run and will continue to run every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday throughout August and although there has been a positive uptake of the programme on these days, many restaurants, pubs and cafes have reported that they remain quieter for the rest of the week. However they are positive about the public returning to eat out at all.

There are more than 85,000 locations participating in the initiative and so far more than £180m has been claimed back by businesses.
