The Japanese convenience store chain is set to roll out on-demand home-delivery services in its home market by 2025.
The company has said that it intends to offer the delivery service in as little as 30 minutes as part of a strategic move to boost sales to consumers that remain reluctant to go out for their shopping due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. Furthermore, the move comes as 7-Eleven Japan gears up to compete with Amazon.
A recent report showed that Japan’s convenience store sales have dropped by 6.1 per cent last year, which was the industry’s first downturn since 1981. However, the country’s e-commerce sector has recorded unprecedented growth, overtaking convenience chain sales for the first time.
7-Eleven’s delivery services are currently available at 550 stores across Tokyo, Hokkaido and Hiroshima Prefecture, with 1000 more outlets to be added in these regions before March 2022.
