The iconic flagship store will be shutting in February of 2021, cutting 60 jobs.
Located in a huge space of 675,000sq ft, the downtown Winnipeg Hudson’s Bay was the company’s Canadian flagship between 1926 and 1974. Over the past ten years or so, the store has continued to downsize and now exists in just two floors of retail space. The basement of the building was converted into a Zellers store in 2010; however this closed in March 2013.
According to a statement from a spokesperson for Hudson’s Bay Company, this decision comes amid shifting consumer behaviours and changes to how and where people shop. The spokesperson also commented that Winnipeg remains an important market for the company and that customers can continue to shop at their two existing shops and online.
