New Lockdown Restrictions to Impact UK Retail

The introduction of a tougher Tier 4 will see all non-essential retail across London, the southeast and east England close once again.

The new closures and restrictions are expected to see retailers lose as much as £4bn over the two week festive period. As well as non-essential retail, the new Tier 4 will also see the closure of gyms, which will be forced to close and travelling abroad has also been restricted.

Helen Dickinson, BRC Chief Executive commented: “We know the government has got difficult decisions to make and the Covid situation is very fast-moving but this is hugely regrettable news. Retailers invested hundreds of millions marking shops Covid-secture and Sage experts’ advice has been that closing non-essential retail has a minimal impact on the virus spread.”

The news is a massive blow to all retailers as this latest lockdown is right in the middle of peak trading, which so many company’s depended on to aid in their recovery.
