Ocean Park to Undergo Resort Makeover

The theme park, located in Hong Kong is set to undergo a period of renovation, shifting from a theme park to a themed resort.

The transformation will be funded by Hong Kong’s Government, who are set to provide a $361M for the struggling theme park. The park was first created in 1977 and has now been operating at a loss for the past four years. The government’s injection of cash will be two-fold, $251M will act as working capital while a further $144M will provide running costs for four years.

Moving from a traditional theme park, Ocean Park will become a self-sufficient marine conservation centre, travel destination and edutainment hub. Visitors will be able to explore seven new themed zones – Ocean Square, Azure Bay, Discovery Grove, Pacific Point, Adventure Valley, Explorers Wharf and Ocean’s Edge. Each zone will feature a number of immersive edutainment experiences and rides.

Edward Yau Tang-Wah, Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, commented: “Ocean Park is more than a theme park, more than roller-coasters. We agreed that the Park should steer away from the conventional development model of theme parks, cut down on facilities and related expenses which are not cost-effective and re-orient its development focus back to education and conservation.”
