Allbirds Unveils First 100 Per Cent Natural Leather Alternative

The leather alternative is made with vegetable oil, natural rubber and other bio-ingredients and is a fully biodegradable 100 per cent natural material.

Allbirds is committed to keeping their brand as eco-friendly as possible and looks to find new sustainable materials for their products. Their new leather alternative is the direct result of $2M investment in material innovation company Natural Fiber Wielding Inc. and its Mirum technology.

The new material will be used as part of a major commercial footwear product launch set for December 2021 and will then be added to the brands suite of open-source eco-materials.

Joey Zwillinger, Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Allbirds, commented: “For too long, fashion companies have relied on dirty synthetics and unsustainable leather, prioritising speed and cost over the environment. Natural Fiber Welding is creating scalable, sustainable antidotes to leather, and doing so with the potential for a game-changing 98 per cent reduction in carbon emissions.”
