UK’s First Amazon Go Store Set to Open

According to reports, the online retail giant plans to open its first UK Amazon Go store in Ealing, London this week.

Much like its American counterpart, the new Ealing Amazon Go store will be checkout-less, instead employing The Just Walk Out technology meaning that customers can avoid ques, speeding up their shopping experience.

Upon entering the store, customers must scan the Amazon Go app on the gated turnstile. Following this, they are monitored on cameras while weight sensors located in the shelves help Amazon determine exactly what people take. Once picked up, items are added to a virtual shopping cart which is automatically paid for when they walk out of the shop with Amazon utilising the card that is associated with their Amazon account.

Although there is no checkout staff, a select few staff members work on the shop floor, helping customers with any queries and replenishing stock when necessary.

Should this store perform successfully, reports suggest that Amazon may open up to 30 stores sites across the UK.
