Thorntons Set to Close All Stores

The iconic chocolatier has announced plans to permanently close its entire UK portfolio of 61 stores, putting 603 jobs at risk.

A part of the British high street or more than a century, beloved chocolate retailer Thortons is the latest brand to be hit by the lasting impacts of the global Coronavirus pandemic and subsequent lockdowns.

The company intends to close their entire UK real estate portfolio, instead shifting their attention to online sales, which have enjoyed a 71 per cent increase compared to last year. Their e-commerce offering will remain a key focus for the brand in providing customers with their favourite items, including their unique personalisation offering. Alongside this, the brand intends to continue investing in building their grocery channels to meet customer demand.

Thorntons Retail Director, Adam Goddard, commented: “We have been trading in the most challenging circumstances. Unfortunately, like many others, the obstacles we have faced and will continue to face on the high street are too severe and despite our best efforts we have taken the difficult decision to permanently close our retail store estate.”
