Hong Kong lawmakers have approved Ocean Park’s $876M makeover plans, with just one legislator voting against it.
It was previously announced that the Hong Kong government intended to invest $46M to turn the theme park into an educational attraction and conservation hub. Ocean Park Chairman, Lau Ming-Wai, now confirmed that the resort will focus on a new makeover rather than the development of a retail, dining and entertainment hub.
The theme park will involve relaunching the 44-year old attraction as an open-air classroom and adventure-themed resort. The park will feature conservation and education facilities along a new HK$4bn Water World, which will include 27 attractions.
The approved funding includes HK$1.66bn to go towards operational costs and capital expenditure. Meanwhile, HK$1.12bn will be allocated to conservation and educational work. Legislators also agreed to waive interest payments on two loans of HK$5.4bn. These repayments will be delayed through 2028 and fully settled by 2059.
