New ‘World-Class Boulevard’ Coming to Sydney

Sydney is investing $43.5M to convert the city’s downtown retail destination George Street into a ‘world-class pedestrian boulevard’.

The already famous George Street is home to a number of retail stores and dining venues including the new premium IGA Locali grocer, the city’s Apple flagship and a giant Mecca store. A number of new stores are set to open on George Street this year, including Australia’s largest Lululemon flagship and a Bally flagship.

The investment will see the integration of new green spaces and street furniture, wider footpaths, and a number of outdoor dining areas. Already underway is a 9,000sq m car-free area which spans from the George Street light rail route from Town Hall to Railway Square.

Lord Mayor Clover Moore, commented: “We are working closely with businesses to minimise disruption. Extending this public space with permanent, quality infrastructure will make the whole area appealing for workers, visitors, residents and local businesses, and encourage walking through the centre of our city.”
