New York’s Oldest Museum to Expand

The New York Historical Society is set to add over 70,000sq ft to its existing building, including space for the American LGBTQ+ Museum.

This will be the first museum dedicated to the LGBTQ history and culture in the city and the move comes following local activists talking about the need for a museum to document the rich and important history of the queer movement for decades.

Richard Burns, the museum’s Board Chair, commented: “We need a museum that tells the untold stories of regular lived lives, activists’ lives, lives that were lost in queer New York and queer America.”

The LGBTQ museum space is just one part of the five-storey addition to the Historical Society museum. The move will extend classrooms for the Academy for American Democracy programme which is currently offered online.
