Sears to Close Last Michigan Department Store

The brand is closing its department store at Westland Shopping Center, their last retail location in Michigan.

Sears was once among the largest retailers in the world, however this most recent closure announcement is the latest of hundreds since 2017. It was first reported by hometownlife.com that the store on Warren Road had placed closing sale signs in the windows revealing the store’s imminent demise.

According to Robert Gibbs, of the Gibbs Planning Group in Birmingham, the Sears brand “didn’t change, didn’t catch up with the Internet, computers. And Target, Walmart, Kohl’s, Mervyn’s tooj their customers. It was a great store up until 1975, but it just didn’t keep up with technology.”

Owner Transformco has not yet commented on the news. Transformco purchased the assets of Sears Holdings after the brand filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy towards the end of 2018.
