London Legacy Development Corporation will debate the plans next month and if approved, MSG Sphere London will become the largest concert arena in the UK.
Madison Square Garden’s (MSG) planning application will be reviewed at the end of September by the LLDC (London Legacy Development Corporation). Occupying a huge triangular space of 1.9 hecatres, MSG purchased the site for £9M in 2015.
If the plans are approved, MSG Sphere London will boast a 21,500 capacity, making it the largest capacity for an indoor venue in the UK. The plans show a bold deign with its outer skin covered in illuminated LEDs which will glow for 24 hours a day and will include animated advertisements for half the time.
MSG is also already constructing a similar venue in Las Vegas which is expected to open in 2023. The spheres have been designed by Populous, and promise to offer the next generation of immersive experiences. The London Sphere will host eSports events, ring sports, circus events and shows as well as music concerts. It will also feature a giant auditorium, a 1,500 capacity venue for emerging acts, F&B outlets, shops, and outdoor spaces.
