Oman to Break Ground on Botanic Garden

The country is set to break ground on the $175M botanic garden project, which is due to be complete by 2023 and will be the largest of its kind in the Arabian Peninsula.

According to tourism experts, the botanic garden is part of Oman’s plans to diversify its attractions. The project will include two biomes and surrounding habitats filled with endangered flora. Located at the foot of the Al Hajar Mountains, the location will span a staggering 420 hectare and will be complete with a visitor centre, play area, nature reserve and educational and research facilities.

The design team is led by Arup alongside Grimshaw Architects and Haley Sharpe Design. With an estimated cost of around $175M, the project has been described by those involved as an astonishing project that features many layers of interwoven cultural and environmental significance.

Salim Al Mahrouqi, Minister of Heritage and Tourism, commented: “It will be one of the largest botanic gardens in the world. It will present an opportunity for visitors to experience the flora and vegetation of Oman while learning about the agricultural heritage, rich cultural traditions and legendary hospitality of the country.”
