The country’s largest owner of shopping malls said it will not open any domestic properties on 25 November, Thanksgiving Day. Its centres will reopen on Black Friday.
Simon malls are going dark on Thanksgiving Day for the second consecutive year. The move by Simon comes as more and more retailers, ranging from Walmart and Target to Best Buy and Dick’s Sporting Goods, are shutting their doors on the holiday, a trend that gained momentum during the pandemic. REI is even taking it one step further, closing on Turkey Day and Black Friday. Other retailers that have announced Thanksgiving Day closings are Costco and Kohl’s.
In a survey by shopping rewards app Shopkick, 70 per cent of respondents expressed support retailers for closing their doors on Thanksgiving Day. However, 23 per cent still plan to shop on the day, and 60 per cent of those will shop in-store.
