Previously a struggling mall, developer GrandJoy has unveiled the renovated ‘Joy Breeze’ lifestyle destination, designed by architecture and urban planning firm Jerde.
The development, which spans an area of 805,000sq ft, will now be home to a variety of entertainment, retail and F&B tenants. A section of the building has been carved out to create additional outdoor public space and a garden terrace has been created above the city streets.
Eduardo Lopez, Senior VP and Senior Design Principal, Jerde, commented: “We took the ideas of fire and light and translated them into the glowing, translucent, lantern-like forms of the new buildings. In Chinese culture the lanterns are a symbolic representation of celebration and prosperity, positioning this project as Beijing’s new destination for urban renewal and discovery.”
According to Lopez, when visitors move through the project, they are guided through a choreographed journey. They can explore the sunken walkway or experience the outdoor entertainment plaza, with the idea being that guests are met with a new experience at every turn.
