The discount supermarket has ended its grocery partnership with Deliveroo in an effort to focus on its own home shopping service.
Aldi launched a trial with Deliveroo during the pandemic, offering grocery orders and home deliveries from around 100 of Aldi’s 950 stores. Ending their partnership marks a shift away for Aldi from food delivery, which is seen as less profitable.
A statement issued by the company read: “We have decided to end our trial with Deliveroo to focus on our click-and-collect service, which remains on offer at more than 200 of our stores nationwide.”
According to figures recently released by the delivery company, Deliveroo’s sales were up by 36 per cent in the three months to 31 December compared with the same period a year before and 11 per cent ahead of the previous quarter. Meanwhile, their figures showed signs of slowing down from the annual run-rate of 70 per cent. The company also said the grocery sales made up 8 per cent of the food delivery specialist’s total in the second half of 2021, up from 6 per cent in the same period in 2020.
