Aldi U.S. Has Big Expansion Plans for 2025

The discount grocer says it plans to open more than 225 new stores during 2025 in the US as part of its five-year growth plan, marking the most stores it will open in one year in the company’s nearly 50-year U.S. history. Aldi previously announced that it aimed to reach 800 new stores by 2028.

Last year, the grocer opened nearly 120 locations, bringing its total store count to over 2,400 and solidifying its position as the third-largest grocery chain by store count in the country.

Aldi’s new store growth in 2025 will include a combination of organic growth and converting select Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket stores to the Aldi format. (In March 2024, the company completed its acquisition of some 400 stores Winn-Dixie and Harvey Supermarket stores from Southeastern Grocers.)  In total, Aldi will convert approximately 220 Southeastern Grocers (SEG) locations through 2027.

As part of the strategy, Aldi said it has closed a transaction to divest approximately 170 Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket stores that are not part of the conversion plan to a consortium led by C&S Wholesale Grocers, Southeastern Grocers’ senior leadership and private investors. Aldi says this transaction allows the grocer to create a “focused conversion portfolio in the Southeast as it progresses its expansion plans across the country.”
