New data has revealed that footfall across UK retail locations dropped by 83.1 per cent over the Easter weekend compared to last year’s Easter period.
The figures from retail intelligence specialist Springboard also show that footfall was 14.5 per cent down from the same four days in the previous week as shoppers adhered to the government’s enforced lockdown.
Footfall did increase by 3.7 per cent on Saturday from the Saturday before. However, on Monday there was a 24.2 per cent decline from the previous Monday which Springboard said could be a result of the day’s much cooler weather. Springboard said retail parks have fared much better than other locations during the lockdown due to the space they offer for social distancing.
Diane Wehrle, Insights Director at Springboard, added: “As lock down is likely to continue for some weeks yet, Britons will remember the role retail staff across grocery, pharmacy and every day essentials stores played in March 2020 and beyond in keeping it possible for families and households to continue to shop during such troubling times.”
