H&M are to temporarily close stores in Italy and close some stores permanently

The world’s second largest fashion retailer, H&M are to temporarily close stores in Italy. After more than a month of very strict lockdown measures – clothing retailers will be allowed to open for business on May 18.

However H&M has stated that two of its biggest stores (Milan & Bari) will sadly never reopen again. Furthermore, the retailer intends to permanently close shops in the northern cities of Udine, Vicenza, Bassano del Grappa, Gorizia and in the Tuscan town of Grosseto.

Gennaro Strazzullo, a member of the UIL national union said: “The company said the closures are necessary to guarantee the long-term sustainability of the firm, but the group is not struggling and their balance sheets are good.”
