30% of people who expect to do more online over the next six months will do so because they want to avoid high streets and shopping centres to reduce their chances of catching the virus
New research (1) from JGOO, the next generation leader in digital commerce, reveals that in the first six months after the Coronavirus lockdown is lifted, 40% of people expect the number of times they visit high streets and shopping centres to fall, with 12% predicting a ‘dramatic’ drop. Just 15% think they will visit them more.
Of those people who think they will be making fewer visits, 9% say they won’t go at all, and one in five (20%) expect the number of trips they make on an average monthly basis to fall by five or more.
| Average monthly drop in the number of visits to high streets and shopping centres after the Coronavirus lockdown ends | Percentage of people who plan to make fewer visits to high streets and shopping centres after the Coronavirus lockdown is lifted |

| 3 – 4 trips | 29% |
| 5 – 6 trips | 13% |
| 7 – 8 trips | 2% |

JGOO says UK retailers need to be thinking globally, and develop strong online propositions which they can push to overseas markets, such as China. Through its official partnerships with China’s leading social media and payments platforms, JGOO connects Western brands to online shoppers in China, enabling them to tap into China’s trillion dollar online market.
Richard Morecroft, Co-Founder of JGOO said: “Our findings show that people are doing more of their shopping online and getting increasingly used to it, so even after the Coronavirus lockdown is lifted, many won’t necessarily return to shops and high streets in the same way they did before the crisis. Also, our findings show that of those people who plan to do more online shopping, 30% will do so because they want to avoid high streets and shopping centres to reduce their chances of catching the virus.”
