Spain seeing faster recovery of flows than China

According to data by CBRE, the recovery of inflows in shopping centres is progressing in Spain at a faster rate than in other countries such as China.

Thus, after four weeks of gradual reopening in shopping centres in Spain (from the start of phase two on Monday 25 May and until Sunday 21 June, when the state of alarm was lifted) and despite being partial openings and with limited capacity, the influx figure was only 29 per cent below that registered a year earlier.

“We are optimistic about a recovery of activity in shopping centres in the medium term. We see how the return to these spaces is faster than in China, where it took eight weeks from reopening to reach a -20 per cent influx, “says Gonzalo Senra, National Director of Retail for CBRE Spain.

The data comes from the analysis of the portfolio of more than thirty shopping centres that CBRE manages throughout Spain. By area, the dominant shopping centres managed by CBRE in the north of the country (such as Puerto Venecia, in Zaragoza, and El Boulevard de Vitoria) registered influx figures even slightly higher than those of a year earlier.

“Obviously, we are still below the levels that were registered in the previous normality, but these figures are encouraging because they reflect that citizens are encouraged to return to shopping centres and that they trust in the measures adopted to guarantee their safety and well-being,” adds Senra.
