Amazon would reportedly like to turn a former manufacturing facility in Massachusetts into a new supply chain hub. Amazon would like to build a distribution center at the site of a facility in North Andover, Massachusetts. The Dallas-based real estate developer Hillwood Development Co. plans to purchase 110 acres of the 168-acre site and build the new center, which it would lease to Amazon.
North Andover is approximately 35 miles north of Boston and has exits on the Route 93 and 495 interstate highways. Amazon currently operates a Massachusetts fulfillment center in Fall River, Massachusetts, located about 50 miles south of Boston.
The center would stand five stories (105 feet) high and employ approximately 1,500 workers. The project requires approval, which will take place at a Town Meeting on June 18. Although it is estimated Amazon would pay the town between $3.3 million and $4.4 million in annual real estate taxes, possible sticking points include a necessary sewer extension estimated to cost between $6.7 million and $7 million, with the town paying one-third and also increased traffic.
