Amazon Opens ‘Just Walk Out’ Store in Illinois

The Illinois market is getting its fifth Amazon brick-and-mortar grocery store, and its first fully autonomous checkout.

Located in Westmont, the new store occupies an area of roughly 35,000sq ft, making it the largest Amazon Fresh store to feature Amazon’s ‘Just Walk Out’ technology. The technology leverages a combination of computer vision, sensor fusion and deep learning that allows shoppers to pick the items they want and skip the checkout when they are done.

Customers will be prompted to scan the QR code in their Amazon App to open the Just Walk Out gates. Once inside, customers can continue to shop like normal. Anything that they take off the shelf is automatically added to their virtual cart, and anything that they put back will be deducted from their virtual cart.

The omni-channel retail giant now operates 20 Amazon Fresh stores across the US. Eight of these are in California, five in Illinois, three in Washington State, and one each in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Washington D.C.
