Amazon to Open Department Stores

The online giant’s next foray into bricks-and-mortar retailing will centre around large spaces, similar to department stores.

The company is said to be planning to open 30,000sq ft stores that follow a similar set up to small department stores. The first of these are expected to open in California and Ohio, although London has been another location that has been rumoured to be of interest to Amazon.

At 30,000sq ft, the new Amazon stores would be much smaller than the traditional department store model however this falls in line with new smaller concepts currently being opened by giants such as Bloomingdale’s and Nordstrom. Due to their smaller size, the department stores are expected to be located in strip malls.

The brand reportedly intends to use the department stores to help it sell more apparel and technology goods with both national and its own product assortment expected to be represented in store. The omnichannel company is said to have initially approached a number of unspecified US apparel brands back in 2019 regarding selling their items in its department stores.
